Amla Ruia, a 76-year-old woman from Mumbai, India, took upon a mission to fight Rajasthan’s perennial water crisis. Not a government officer or an NGO, Amla, famously known as ‘Water Mother’, started her journey back in 2001 when she witnessed the severe drought in Rajasthan’s villages.

Over the past two decades, Amla has helped build more than 200 check dams in over 100 villages, impacting the lives of more than 2 million people in Rajasthan. These check dams have brought a significant increase in agricultural production and income for the local farmers.
