🌱 The Initiative
In 2019, the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, led an inspiring initiative to transform waste into wealth. Known as the ‘Clean Indore Model’, it focused on efficient waste management.
💡 What Happened?
Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) adopted a decentralised approach to waste management. They segregated waste at source, composted wet waste, and recycled dry waste. Indore became India’s cleanest city for the fourth consecutive year in 2020, according to the Swachh Survekshan survey.
📈 Impact
- Indore’s 61 wards became Open Defecation Free (ODF).
- 100% door-to-door collection and segregation of waste were achieved.
- Over 1000 tonnes of waste was processed daily, resulting in over 60 tonnes of compost.
📍 The Bigger Picture
The Clean Indore Model has since been adopted by other Indian cities. It’s a significant milestone towards ensuring Swachh Bharat (Clean India).
