Unsung Hero of the Hills: Dashrath Manjhi

🌱 What Happened

In the remote village of Gehlaur, Bihar, a man named Dashrath Manjhi, also known as the Mountain Man, carved a road through a mountain for 22 long years, using only a hammer and a chisel. His motivation was the tragic loss of his wife, who passed away due to lack of medical help, with the nearest doctor located across the mountain.

💡 Impact

Manjhi’s determination resulted in a 110m long, 9.1m wide path, reducing the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Bihar from 55km to just 15km. This reduction has had an enormous impact on the community, providing them with easier access to medical facilities, schools, and markets.

  • Manjhi’s road was officially recognized by the Bihar government in 2007.
  • His achievement was celebrated with a Bollywood movie, ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’, in 2015.

📍 The Bigger Picture

Dashrath Manjhi’s story is a shining example of how one person’s determination can overcome obstacles and bring about change. His unwavering resolve and selflessness have left an indelible mark, inspiring generations with the power of perseverance and the belief that ‘The Mountain Man’ himself embodied: “Nothing is impossible!”
