🌱 What Happened
In 1979, a then 16-year old Jadav Payeng, devastated by the effects of erosion in his birthplace, the Majuli Island in India, made a resolution. He decided to plant a tree every day on the barren land. Fast forward to today, his dedication and perseverance have borne the fruits in the form of a 1,360-acre lush green forest, now known as Molai Forest.
💡 Impact
Jadav’s undying commitment created not only a forest but also a safe habitat for several endangered species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, and over 100 deer and rabbits. Molai Forest also houses multiple species of birds, including a large number of vultures, not seen elsewhere in the region.
